The mission of Helping Hand Worldwide is to relieve hunger daily and to improve the health and the quality of life for those in need by offering free access to wholesome, nutritious food. We are able to meet our goal of alleviating hunger in our own neighborhoods through the Mobile Food Pantry Program. Our three refrigerated delivery trucks make it possible to distribute fresh and healthy food directly to 30 communities with great need. We operate weekly food site distributions on a regularly scheduled basis to underserved communities throughout the county. In addition, our Mobile Food Pantry assists the military community by delivering nutritious food each week to our soldiers and their families living on base at Camp Pendleton. Up to 5,000 military personnel benefit from the 30,000 pounds of food and supplies we distribute every Tuesday morning. The Mobile Food Pantry operates 362 days per year, rain or shine.
Helping Hand Worldwide offers a unique approach to combatting hunger through our Mobile Food Pantry which distributes fresh, healthy food free of charge to needy recipients in 14 Orange County cities. We proudly deliver food and other goods to two different military housing communities at Camp Pendleton. Our refrigerated trucks keep food at a safe temperature meeting Orange County Department of Health guidelines. High quality meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, dairy products, grains and deli-style cheese are delivered promptly to these communities, usually within hours of donation. Our recipients are treated professionally and with respect by our 250 volunteers working at the 30 different locations we service. We also distribute basic necessities such as hygiene products and toiletries. We offer our recipients a little something special too, fresh flowers, plants and bakery goods. The Helping Hand Worldwide Mobile Food Pantry delivers 16,500 pounds of fresh food and other supplies daily.
Recent statistics from the Public Policy Institute of California indicate there are 379,000 food-insecure adults living in Orange County. Even more tragic, an estimated 177,650 children are going to bed hungry at night (1 in 5 children). We are dedicated to alleviating hunger for the most vulnerable members of society including the unemployed and working poor, mentally and physically challenged individuals, senior citizens and the elderly, military families and children. It is tragic to see countless individuals suffering from chronic health problems due to nutrient poor meals. Our food distribution sites include low-income housing communities, senior centers, schools and churches. The Mobile Food Pantry provides nutritious and plentiful food to 36,000 recipients per month. Helping Hand Worldwide provides a sustainable, healthy food system ensuring recipients the health benefits of balanced nutrition; thus reducing the likelihood of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, anemia, and other illnesses caused by malnutrition.
Everyone knows Orange County is a very affluent county, in fact, the cost of living ranks as the 9th highest in the nation. But what you don’t see hidden behind the walls of opulence are men and women struggling to survive because their unemployment benefits have run out or children suffering from learning disorders due to chronic hunger. If you look closely, you will see the homeless veterans living on the streets up and down the Coast of Orange County. In a county of great wealth there is also great despair. 44% of senior citizens over age 60 do not have enough income to pay for basic needs. They must make choices every day between healthy food, prescriptions, transportation and housing. These people and thousands like them are our recipients and we are committed to improving their quality of life by alleviating hunger. With the help of our 34 retail partners, Helping Hand Worldwide distributed 6,000,000 pounds of food and other goods in 2014, with a retail value of $7,000,000!
Helping Hand Worldwide is dedicated to improving the quality of life of our recipients by building stronger communities with the help of our compassionate and well trained volunteers. We believe quality of life begins with good health and fellowship that creates a strong community. The people in the communities we service have become our extended family. We are committed to helping our recipients face the hardships in their lives with respect and a sense of community that represents a model of triumph over despair. Our volunteers play an integral role in the process of bringing about a change in how people relate to one another that leads to a renewed sense of well-being.
Helping Hand Worldwide improves the quality of life for people in the communities we service. We begin with providing resources that fulfill basic needs. Equally important to providing balanced nutrition is our goal to facilitate the involvement of both individuals and families in the communities to look after each other, support one another and build a brighter future. Community members are empowered to bring out the best in each other while the bonds are strengthened for the community as a whole. Our volunteers become “Community Custodians” entrusted with the responsibility to elevate the overall quality of life of our recipients. They are passionate about helping others lead happier and healthier lives.
